5. Translation from fiber to composite

Adequate translation of fiber properties to the composite is affected by various factors, and also, becomes more difficult when carbon fiber strength/modulus increases.

   Although the details should be discussed on a case by case basis, our general understandings of the translation phenomena are;

i) degree of surface treatment
ii) adhesion interaction between carbon fiber and matrix
iii) resin elongation and modulus
iv) resin hot-wet characteristics

    Our research on carbon fiber surface physics and chemistry is mainly conducted by Toray Research Center, and composite translation to Toray Composite Research Laboratory.

    Sizing is another aspect of surface treatment. Sizing is often applied to carbon fiber bundles to improve their handling characteristics.
TORAYCA has two different kinds of sizing.

     Type 4 : Bisphenol A diglycidylether type, compatible with epoxy

     Type 5 : Bisphenol A diglycidylether and copolyester of saturated fatty acids, compatible with epoxy and polyester

  In a special case, we can supply no-sized carbon fiber.
